Frequently Asked Questions (Note: This page will be updated when I get more feedback. For now, these are the questions I got about the old strips.) Q: "Why the hell are they stick figures?" A: This is the number one question. And the only answer I have is that they've always been stick figures. That's what the characters were when I first sketched them, and that's all they can ever be. Q: "No seriously, are they stick figures because you can't draw?" A: I can draw. Not as well as most, but nevertheless. My humans look freakishly bizarre. The anthropomorphic animals look better. I draw penguins and ducks very well. And aliens. And the occasional snarling hellbeast. And pickles wearing capes. I wanted the drawing style to fit the story and the effort it would take to draw them as solid people would take too much time and eventually kill the urge to work on the strip. And there's the fact that a simplistic art style is an irony in the face of a complex and intricately-weaved story. So I guess the ultimate answer is... they just are. Q: "Are these characters based on real people?" A: Some are, some aren't. Dan is real... he's me. Everybody from the first and third storylines were originally based on real people. They've changed over the years, of course. And I had to take certain, er... liberties with a few of them. Jinny was once based on a real person, but became a completely different and better character then the girl she was based on. Ash is a composite character, and I've never admitted who he's based on. (Well, that's changed now... but I doubt the signifigance was realized.) So, yeah... I draw my inspirations mostly from real people. Q: "Where do the ideas for the storylines come from?" A: Some of the storylines actually happened. I really did build a time machine. (It didn't work, but it amused people.) Jeremy really did make inventions. Dana's Story actually happened, but not to him. A talking dog really did... uh... maybe not. Q: "Why are the strips in black and white?" A: You try coloring a stick figure. |
